Disclaimer: This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Ragu.
Dinnertime in the Del Bueno household is kind of a nightmare. Okay, I’ll just be honest. It’s a total nightmare. Lily is mostly plant-like and survives on water and air and occasional sunlight. Arden has a slightly better appetite, but her preferences change by the moment. One day she might eat ham, the next you’d think I’d put a plate of live cockroaches in front of her (when it’s really just more ham).
I was lucky enough to experiment with using Ragu to feed my family . . . fully expecting my kids to complain and tell me all the reasons they hated the food. I got my big box of Ragu, opened it up and went to work picking a recipe that could work for all four of us.
I’m sort of a pasta sauce snob. I’m married to an Italian with very specific ideas about how sauce should taste and what should be in it. Ragu isn’t something we normally buy, but the recipes looked pretty tasty and very easy. I’ve been doing Weight Watchers since March, so my intial complaint was that the majority of the recipes were not WW-friendly - even if I tried to adapt them. Of course, that could have been mostly because the recipes I chose were geared toward food the kids would eat.
Recipe 1: Upside-Down Deep Dish Pizza
Super-easy to make and really quite tasty. Totally not diet friendly, but Arden and Lily both loved dunking the pizza crust into the sauce. It only took me about 40 minutes from start to finish. It certainly wasn’t the prettiest thing once you cut into it, but as Arden shouted, “This is deeeeee-licious!”

Del Bueno Family votes:
Mike: 2 thumbs up
Arden: 1 thumb up (covered in tomato sauce)
Cristina: 1 thumb up, diet thumb down
Lily: It’s not air and water, therefore I don’t like it.
For my second recipe, Mike requested Chicken Parmesan Alfredo. He loves alfredo, so I figured I’d give it a shot.
Much as the girls complain, they do love it when it appears I have cooked a meal from scratch (shhh, don’t tell them). By “love it”, I mean they always complain and tell me that McDonald’s tastes better. Sigh. However, this recipe was a hit with 3 out of 4 (guess who the fourth was?) and that’s about the best stats I can expect on a regular evening.
Mike: 2 thumbs up, grunt with mouth full of food.
Arden: Why is it white? Yummy.
Lily: It’s not air or water, so I’m not eating it.
Cristina: If I work out for 3 hours tomorrow, I should be able to burn off all the fat and calories. Maybe.
Recipe 3: Easy Homemade Pizza
Finally, a recipe I could get Lily to eat! She likes pizza - without sauce. Clever me. I rolled out the dough and left a big section of it naked and sauceless, then covered it with mozzarella. I snuck in some low-fat mozzarella because, well, because I could. No one seemed to notice:
I batted 4 for 4 on this one.
Mike: Muffled moans and chewing.
Arden: Mommy! Look, I made finger paints from the sauce!
Lily: I like mine without sauce. I will eat this.
Cristina: Thank god everyone is eating. (Grabs slice and runs from kitchen)
All of the recipes I tried (not accidental, I might add) took less than 45 minutes each to make and usually were made from ingredients I had in the house. While I am still not a fan of Ragu on plain pasta, it’s pretty tasty when mixed with other ingredients. Using refrigerated pizza dough is a quick and easy way to make a warm meal that most of my family will eat. As for that sticky 4th person, well, maybe I’ll have to start adding Miracle-Gro to her diet.

My little girl loves Ranch and veggies! My kids do pretty good with eating veggies and fruit. Sometimes I do have to remind they to drink more milk. But with a pick-e eater I would cook a good meal (NOT spice) and that was the meal (lunch) other wise it WILL be the next one (dinner). We don’t waste and money does not grow on trees!
I always try to offer fruits and/or veggies at every meal.
I wish I could help you with the plant girl situation-my daughter would live on peanut butter sanwiches if I let her! LOL!
I try to serve fruits and veggies at every meal. I also like to serve high fiber foods.
My method of getting more nutrition into the kids? Make most everything from scratch, as much as possible.
If by plant girl, you mean vegetarian - then I would definitely go with things that pack a lot of nutritional punch and are also fun to eat. Polenta is fun because you can cut shapes out of it, and black beans are really versatile. You could make your own veggie burgers with her. Here’s a good recipe (http://www.theveggietable.com/recipes/blackbeanburgers.html), and it fits your quick and easy requirements!
I just started using E-Mealz. It’s only $5 a month and you get to pick from several different meal plan options. Since my husband is doing Weight Watchers, I chose the Point System Wal-Mart for two meal plan. They put out a new list every Wednesday, complete with instructions and an aisle-by-aisle shopping list. It’s saving us money and helping us stay slim and trim!

I try my best to disguise extra fruits and veggies into anything I make. My toddler daughter can’t even tell the difference, but it is much better for her!
Only milk and water for my kids. Also lots of snacks and not making them clean their plate. They are learning to stop eating when they are full—-unlike many of us adults that overeat! eek!
jenny
I limit my childrens snack foods only nuts fruit and yougart, threy did not like it at first but have learned to like it.
I try to sneak veggies and fruits into everything!
And ketchup or ranch dressing are a big help too!
Thanks
I offer a ton of veggies and fruits with most meals and am teaching my kids portion control and serving size

I do things in casseroles so that I can get the meat and veggie in.
I love to get the kids involved in picking the foods we buy. It seems to they are then more willing to try new foods. They also love most of their fruits and veggies, I’m very thankful for that.
I just try to keep everything balanced. Moderation is the key.

As long as it’s on a stick (a “Kabob!” my kids will eat it. I try to make eating healthy foods fun and for some reason, I can sneak anything healthy is as long as its on a stick!
I have to be realllll sneaky with veggies. My kids love fruits but do they prefer it instead of chips, and soda NO! Ugghhh
I usually hide veggies in soups, spaghetti sauce etc. I make sure they eat veggies somehow everyday.
To feed my daughter well I do my best to buy organic & I work HARD to get her proper amount of veggies & fruits in each day. Fruits are way easier than veggies!!
I will share a tip from my daughters Ped. Since I am having such a hard time with veggies he recommended V8 Fusion and if you don’t like all the sugar in it then V8 Fusion Light. It has very little sodium and a handful of great tasting flavors. My daughter drinks up the Strawberry Banana. She thinks it’s a fun juice but in reality she is getting a combined serving of fruit & veggies per 8 oz serving!
Great giveaway!
Fruits and veggies are a big part of my little boys diet but the veggies have to be eaten with ranch dressing!! ha ha!!
I feed my kids well by trying to give them fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
I blogged about this:

I feed my kids well by limiting their sugar intake.
What a great giveaway!! I make sure that my family eats well by serving lots of veggies and fruits, as well as whole grains in place of processed grains.
My kids are not fans of veggies but if I smother the veggies with cheese it’s always a hit, plus they get an extra source of calcium out of the deal (:.
I don’t have kids, but I was a very picky eater like your plant-girl (lol) when I was a kid. I grew out of little-by-little and then completely by the time I was in college. I guess when the dorm cafeteria is your main source of substenance, you have to acclimate pretty quickly!
Fresh veggies with dip is always a hit as well as fresh fruit.

Always fruits and veggies with meals…. healthy snacks and no soda
We keep lots of bite-sized fruits and veggies in the fridge
This summer we planted a garden, so we always had delicious, organic vegetables available for meals and snacking. I’ll surely be doing this again next summer. And I’ve canned some of our bounty for the winter months.
I don’t like to cook, but Ragu makes dinner quick and easy!
I feed my son well (usually) by making him try new things always and by not letting him pick his own meal at home - he eats what we eat and always has (there are only 1 or 2 exceptions to this rule). I am lucky though that he likes a lot of things.
My kids are allowed to eat fruits (in moderation) & veggies whenever they want.
Offer them a “choice” between milk & water when thirsty… they almost always pick water, especially if they can use the ice dispenser on fridge!
I find that if you have the good stuff available and easy to get to, it’s eaten. Cube watermelon, freeze grapes, have small containers of carrots and a bottle of ranch dressing for dip. Put healthy crackers in individual serving sized containers. And for heaven’s sake, hide the dark chocolate (in your sock drawer if need be)...that’s just for mommies!
I feed my son well by purchasing whole grains when I can (pasta, bread, crackers, cereal…the list goes on!) and feeding him fresh fruits and veggies.
We eat only whole grains and fresh veggies/fruits…which we love. We drink mostly water, our girls have never had soda(6 year old and 2 year old twins), though I do drink it occasionally. I am currently doing Weight Watchers and have lost almost 30 pounds, I believe the whole family has benefited from the healthier cooking.
I feed my kids well by meal planning. It really helps to make sure they get a good, healthy dinner and we don’t give in the urge to eat fast food on busy nights!
We always have fruit on hand. My son is going thru and picky two year old stage and does not eat a lot of veggies. We offer veggies at each meal but also have fruit available. At least he is getting one or the other.
I feed them well by trying to balance all our meals with the right amount of fat, proteins, dairy and of course fruits and veggies. It is so important to make sure they get those good foods.

We try to eliminate as many high processed and sugary foods from the pantry that we can and encourage fresh food and lots of fruit.
I offer lots of fruits and veggies for my family.
I try to feed my family as many fruits and veggies as possible. I also try to cook meals without lots of preservatives-as organically as I can!
My children have always been wonderful eaters - they love fresh veggies from the neighborhood gardens! Being from the south, we have an abundance of fresh foods year round. The have never turned any foods away. I feel so lucky that they enjoy eating healthy. Hope I win! Thanks, Tammy .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
I make sure we have balanced meals. Water/milk instead of soda, cooking from scratches instead of processed food. Buy natural/organic products whenever possible as long as it’s within the budget.

I make sure my son is getting veggies in his meals every day, and I have to be fairly creative about flavoring or disguising them so he’ll eat them. He loves fruit, so that one is easy.
I am always offering new foods to my kids. I try not to do the same old stuff. I plan all my meals in advance!
I make whole-grain bread from scratch, grow and preserve veggies from the garden and fruit from our trees. The kids eat a lot more of these fresh and healthy fruits/veggies because they taste better and because the kids grew and harvested them.
fruits and veggies go into all of the meals including breakfast!
emily
mainly just trying to cook at all and avoid eating out all the time
I feed my family whole grain breads, rice, pastas with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit. I also buy products that use natural or organic ingredients.
Instead of using ground beef I now only use ground turkey and the children do not even notice it.
sneaky is the key for my picky eaters. smoothies, sauces with pureed veggies is always good too. we also avoid most white products whole grain is the way to go and my children don’t know any different.
Jarred Alfredo sauce gives me the ew-shivers, but damn it does taste good when heated up.
How exactly does one subsist on air and water?
I add an extra color at every meal (this is for my almost 7 month old child). I give him a fruit/veggie, veggie/grain or grain/fruit combination at every solid meal.
I always have a plate of fresh raw fruits and veggies on hand and as a general rule don’t allow junk in the house (no chips, cookies (unless I bake them)and soda only for a special treat.
We try to eat natural/organic as much as possible. And veggies or fruits at every meal.
I try to feed my little boy at least one fruit and veggie at each meal and no fast food!
I don’t force them to eat anymore. Kids will eat when they are hungry and have the right foods to choose from. If there were a choice between the fav. take out and home cooked beans.. yeah, they will choose take out. Don’t give them the choice. Save the dinner plate in case they get hungry later. No treat unless dinner is done. No over-eating which is a BAD BAD habit and hard to break. (My hubby still thinks he has to finish all of the food on his plate). Dinner time is sooo much more ENJOYABLE now.
I love to get kids involved in the cooking - they love to help and it’s a great teaching moment. Thanks for the giveaway!
I always try to sneak veggies in where none of us can find/taste/see them. For example, I will grate a bunch of carrots with a real fine cheese grater and then mix that in pizza sauce. All the health, none of the taste and groans!

This is going to sound a little strange, but one thing I do is not allow snacks every day. Everybody I know thinks kids need at least 2 snacks a day. I think they’re wrong. Sometimes it makes sense, like when dinner is going to be a bit late or breakfast was rushed, but normally, snacking just keeps them from eating the nutritious foods I want them to have at meals. They love everything I feed them, clean their plates at most meals, and haven’t learned that snacking is a way to cure boredom.

My kids are all about pasta and pizza. I can get my son to eat more than my duaghter but in my house i cant go wrong with anything from those 2 categories.
We eat organic when possible, I sneak veggies in everything and my kdis have to try things more than once. they are great eaters.
when I serve meals made with Ragu I’m feeding my kids well because they contain a full serving of vegetables and have no transfats.
My daughter is more likely to enjoy dinner when she was involved in the menu planning or preparation. Don’t know if you already do that with your little plant girl.
To eat well, we belong to a CSA and pick up a box of fresh produce weekly in season.
I love cooking healthy for my family, fresh fruits and veggies add being Italian most of these foods were made with Ragu sauce. Chili on a cold day was a favorite in my house. The kids were a part of gathering coupons and shopping and seeing how much we could save. It was a fun day shopping with the kids .The boys even loved cooking.

well I don’t have kids, but I try to feed myself and my boyfriend well. He’s currently dieting, I’m not. But I love fruits and veggies so we’re just layin off some of the more fatty stuff, like broccoli smothered in cheese whiz. instead I can do a sauteed broccoli with hot pepper. I also just bought some Ronzoni Smart Pasta which is really good. I think wheat pasta is ok, but my BF doesn’t like it. there’s lots of easy healthy choices we can make. like lay off the ice cream and have a nice fruit salad instead.

I feed the kiddos well by letting hubby cook as much as possible. He’s a natural and they love his cooking.
I make sure my kids eat well by always having fruits and vegetables for them to snack on. I rarely buy chips and the like for snacks. We also grow our own garden so ever since they were little they were excited to eat what they pulled out of the garden.
Blogged here: http://amoores.com/2009/10/16/how-do-you-feed-your-family-well/
I buy much less junk food and gravitate towards fresh fruits and veggies. For dinners I use a mix of prepared foods and fresh foods
Luckily I have a lot of nutritional background which helps make sure everyones nutritional needs are met, but I use a local farm share to make sure there is ALWAYS a supply of fresh fruits and veggies around so there is no excuse not to have nutritious meals.
I wish I had a secret formula for getting picky kids to eat. I just keep putting it out there over and over again. Sometimes they actually try it!
I tweeted! http://twitter.com/suburbsanity
We have always made adult food for kids, it doesn’t always go over well, but everyone tries it and it does start to work when both my husband and I like it.
Due to a health issue I do not have children of my own but I am the oldest of 7 and I have 10 nieces and nephes age 10 and under. A few are very picky eaters. I have found a way to get veggies into a 3 yr old who won’t eat veggies to save his life. He loves Zucchini bread so I make that with double the amount of zucchini called for and 1/4 cup less of the sugar. He eats this. He also loves V-* Fusion juice. It has Veggies and fruit in it and then this child also loves artichoke dip. We lessen the amount of sour cream and add a bit more artichoke.
We try to eat organic when we can
I have four children ranging in age from 7 months to 7 years. One of my secrets is to call foods by made up names if they don’t like it. For example, one doesn’t like cheese (the 7 year old), so when I put the plate in front of him I say “...and no cheese for you so I put Gwanga on it.” Keeps noneaten food & fits to an ULTRA mininum!! Try it! It only works if you can keep a straight face and insist it’s not what they think it is!
I try to make dinners from scratch. There are so many ingredients in processed food that probably aren’t good for kids. Sometimes that is really hard though and Ragu and pasta would be a perfect meal for my kids, especially since it counts as a serving of veggies!
My oldest believes cheese should only be on pizza but he will eat the twisted cheddar/string cheese as a snack. And yes, I’ve made casseroles where one corner has no cheese for him and the opposite corner has no mushrooms which makes his sister just as happy. They did grow out of those phases. Certain recipes were easy enough to make them both happy and still have one main course that the entire family ate.
Try to make your snacks and treats just as healthy as your main meals.
When you make your kids eat fruits and veggies when they are young, they will grow to like them much easier.
we try a new food each week, and i keep fruit all the time for them to grab and go.

I can get my kid to eat fruits rather easily. They love them in smoothies or just by themselves. Vegetables are a little harder for them. My youngest one doesn’t like anything green. So, I recently bought a juicer and have been making them 100% natural fruit juice—in other words—40% fruit and 60% vegetable juice!! They love to be able to pick their fruits (mangoes, apples, bananas) and I love adding servings of broccoli, spinach and carrots in there :D

LOL! We totally love pasta around here and I’ve actually been really fortunate - my kids even LOVE broccoli. The only thing I Have a hard time making them eat is Chinese food. Everything else they LOVE.
As for feeding Plant Girl (LMAO) - feed her just a sprinkle of fish food daily.

Feeding everyone well for me comes with giving everyone ‘ownership’ over a portion of the meal. Let your veggie baby make the salad (grow fresh herbs with her that she can include in the veggie side dishes she helps you prepare), let the little ones ‘sous’ and the surly teens can set the table if they are that anti cooking with you. In the end, everyone has a reason to sit down together, they played an integral part in that meal
I grow some of my own fruits and vegetables in the summer. I home can or home freeze some of them for the fall winter months.
I also add peeled, seeded, chopped small zucchini squash into my garden salad. Zucchini doesn’t always have to be cooked. When it’s added to a garden salad most people just think it’s cucumber.
We try to shop local and organic!
I try to include fruits and vegetables into every meal. Sometimes the best way to do this is to add choppped spinach into eggs, squash into spaghetti sauce, fruit into cereal, puree butternut squash into muffin recipes, etc.
I try to change up my meals as much as possible so we don’t get bored. My motto is “you’ll never know if you like it until you try it”. It works for us and I get to have my family try things they wouldn’t normally try. That way I can sneak in some extra veggies!

I just try to make healthy meals for the family and not worry about whether or not the kids are eating them. I serve them the food and they either eat or go hungry. I do try to make sure there is at least one side dish I know they will eat, like applesauce. When my oldest turned 13 she suddenly discovered she liked salad and some veggie, and hopefully the other two will have a similar revelation soon.

My kids are grown, but I still feed them at my house often, and it’s also sometimes challenging to get my husband to eat healthy. My son is a vegetarian, and has been since he was a teenager. Luckily, he likes to cook, so he helps out by making his own “veggie” alternatives when needed. We have vegetarian pasta meals often, and egg dishes (luckily, he eats eggs & dairy). We all like potato or broccoli soup with cheese, and bean burritos.

i push fruits and veggies on my kids! and my husband calls me the “fiber nazi” because i buy everything super high fiber
